Football is among those rare sports where an Olympic gold is not the pinnacle, not since the World Cup’s advent in 1930.

It can, however, be a highlight. Lionel Messi celebrated his first title with Argentina at Beijing 2008. Neymar, after tears at London 2012, claimed glory in winning home gold at Rio 2016.
