Three golds, three meet records for S'pore swim team on Day 2

SINGAPORE - The Republic's swim team secured three golds on the second day of competition, with Joseph Schooling bagging his first two golds of the Games at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

The 19-year-old, entered in nine events, smashed the meet record of 49.99sec with a time of 48.58sec in the men's 100m freestyle. It is also a new national record.

Team-mate Quah Zheng Wen was second in 49.91sec, while Vietnam's Hoang Quy Phuoc was third with 50.60sec.

Before Schooling, Tao Li added another gold for Singapore when she won the 50m butterfly. Tao clocked a Games record time of 26.58, ahead of team-mate Quah Ting Wen who clocked 27.02. philippines' Jasmine Alkhaldi was third in 27.47sec.

Said Tao: "The crowd really helped a lot. It feels good to see so many people, and it makes me want to win for them."

Singapore added a third gold in the men's 4x200m free relay. The quartet of Joseph Schooling, Danny Yeo, Pang Sheng Jun and Quah Zheng Wen smashed the meet record of 7:26.67, clocking 7:18.14. It is also a new national mark.

Samantha Yeo contributed a bronze in the women's 200m individual medley, which Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Anh Vien won with a Games record time of 2:13.53. Thailand's Phiangkhwan Pawapotako was second with 2:18.56.

Anh Vien also won the 200m back, also with a Games record time of 2:14.12. Malaysia's Wong Fu Kang won the other race, the men's 100m breaststroke, in 1:02.46.
