SINGAPORE - Newly crowned Thailand Masters champion Jason Teh returned to Singapore on Feb 3 to a warm welcome from the Singapore Badminton Association (SBA).
Upon his arrival at the Changi Airport Terminal 4, he and Vega Nirwandawas – his sparring partner and on-site coach – were greeted by SBA president Lawrence Leow and other badminton officials.
On Feb 2, the 24-year-old finally ended his title drought when he beat China’s Wang Zhengxing 21-18, 15-21, 21-19 at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok to clinch the Thailand Masters trophy.
The Singaporean badminton player had lost seven successive finals before persevering to claim his first finals win at the US$240,000 (S$325,000) Super 300 event.
En route to the finals, he defeated Israel’s world No. 64 Misha Zilberman, Indonesia’s 159th-ranked Zaki Ubaidillah, South Korea’s world No. 35 Jeon Hyeok-jin and Ireland’s 42nd-ranked Nhat Nguyen.
Teh is expected to climb into the 20s for a new career-high world ranking. He will be home for a week before playing in the Feb 11-16 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Qingdao, China, and embarking on the European swing of the Badminton World Federation World Tour after that.
