LONDON • Serena Williams, absent from competitive tennis for nearly a year, said on Tuesday that she intends to return for Wimbledon, which begins on June 27, after receiving a wild card.
Her latest Instagram post also read: "SW and SW19. It's a date. 2022, see you there."
The 40-year-old has not played on the WTA Tour since injuring her hamstring in the first round of the tournament last year.
In preparation for Wimbledon, she intends to return to competition next week at the WTA event in Eastbourne, where she is set to play doubles with Ons Jabeur.
The former world No. 1 has not indicated whether this will be a farewell appearance or part of a farewell tour.
But this will be her 21st appearance at the All England Club, where she has won seven singles and six doubles titles.
It is unclear whether sister Venus, who turns 42 tomorrow, is also planning on returning.
She has not competed since August and is not on the initial list of Wimbledon wild cards.
Serena has not won a Grand Slam title in more than five years - her most recent Major victory was at the 2017 Australian Open - and has just one WTA title in that time frame at the 2020 Auckland Open.
She remains one Major short of Margaret Court's record of 24 Slam singles titles.
