SINGAPORE - The Republic's top paddler Feng Tianwei succumbed to Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-Ching 2-4 (9-11, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7, 3-11, 10-12) in the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Japan Open quarter-final on Saturday (June 18).

Two sets down, 29-year-old Feng rallied herself to make it 2-2 but Cheng dominated the fifth set when she opened up a 8-0 lead. Despite an evenly-contested last set that went down to match point, Cheng held her nerves to seal a maiden win over the world No. 6 and Olympic singles bronze medallist.

Cheng, the world number 15 will now face either Hayata Hina from Japan or China's Ding Ning in the semi-final on Sunday, after they play their quarter-final tie later on.

The final will be held on Sunday.

The doubles pair of Yu Mengyu and Zhou Yihan also suffered Japan Open exits earlier on Saturday when they lost to China duo Liu Shiwen and Zhu Yuling 1-3 (11-6,2-11,3-11,8-11) in the semi-final.
