National swimmer Letitia Sim always starts packing a week before she travels, a habit she picked up from her mother, to ensure that she has everything she needs when it is time to leave.

The 21-year-old said: “My mum has always ingrained in me to pack super early because we’re always going to forget something last minute...

“I always start packing a week before, put all my clothes and toiletries aside, so that when it’s time to leave I’m a little bit less stressed.”

Always attached to her bag is an octopus keychain given by her cousin when she started international swimming.

Besides the personal significance of the keychain, it also helps her identify which bag is hers. She also has a ribbon with her name on it, which was created by a teammate’s mother, who would make these ribbons whenever the team travelled for meets.

Her swimming teammate Jonathan Tan likes to pack light, bringing just the essentials whenever he travels for overseas meets.

The 22-year-old said: “I don’t like to be carrying things that are too heavy on my shoulders, I like to be light, ready to race, so I don’t like to have extra load.”

The race suit takes swimmers about 20 minutes to wear because of how tight it is.
