SINGAPORE – In a tense and close battle, Singaporean fencer Amita Berthier was shown the exit at the Paris Olympics on July 28 after losing her opening bout 15-13 to world no. 11 Lauren Scruggs of the United States.

Both fencers were locked in a see-saw battle at the Grand Palais, with the score tied at 9-9 after the first period. But Scruggs, the 2019 world junior champion and National Collegiate Athletic Association winner in 2023 – sealed the win in the second period, 15-13, to advance to the next round.

Berthier , 23, who is ranked 35th in the world, was also beaten in the table of 32 in her Olympic debut in Tokyo in 2021.

Singapore’s other fencer in Paris, Kiria Tikanah, is also out of the Olympics after losing 15-10 to Italy’s world No. 6 Alberta Santuccio in the table of 32 on July 27.
