Singapore claim three golds to top medal table at Asian Junior Bowling Championships

SINGAPORE – Singapore wrapped up a successful campaign at the Asian Junior Bowling Championships on Aug 29, finishing the competition with three golds, two silvers and two bronzes to top the medal table.

Coming in second were Hong Kong, who had two golds, three silvers and a bronze, while Malaysia (2-1-0) were third.

On the final day of the competition at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia, Singapore’s Nura Salsabila Zulkifli clinched silver in the girls’ masters event, adding to her girls’ singles bronze and girls’ team gold.

In the girls’ masters stepladder finals, second seed Nura beat Chinese Taipei’s Li Yi-rou 221-156 in the semi-finals to set up a showdown with Kuwait’s top seed Sharifa Askander.

But it was Sharifa who prevailed in the title match, beating Nura 372-362 (191-189, 181-173) over two games to claim gold.

“Participating in the Asian Junior Championships was both a privilege and an unforgettable experience,” said Nura, who credited the support from the Singapore Bowling Federation, coaches, friends and family, and teammates for their success.

“Although the competition presented significant challenges, it provided invaluable lessons in resilience and problem-solving.

“We are deeply grateful for this opportunity and look forward to applying what we learnt to our future endeavours.”

Earlier in the competition, Carine Foo clinched the girls’ singles gold, while Nura bagged bronze.

Rachel Foo and Shannon Lee paired up to claim the girls’ doubles bronze, before the duo, together with Carine and Nura, took the team gold.

Darius See, Izz Irfan Ismail, Lucas Goh and Kaelan Lim were also victorious in the boys’ team event.

Singapore’s other quartet of Gareth Goi, Gautier Tan, Xavier Ng and Thaddaeus Mok claimed the men’s team bronze, but their achievement was not reflected in the medal tally which only shows medals won by each country’s A team.

On the team’s campaign, Singapore coach Jensen Lim said: “It’s a great display of teamwork and shows that when the team comes together as one, anything is possible.

“Our team is very young, with many competing at their first Asian Junior Championships, which makes this achievement even sweeter.

“This championship is an important learning milestone for our youth athletes, and the experience will be embedded throughout their development pathway.”
