SINGAPORE - Led by Wang Wenying, already a SEA Games champion in the individual foil event, Singapore's women clinched the team foil event on Saturday night.
They beat Vietnam 45-26 at Hall 2 of the OCBC Arena.
The team, consisting of Wang, Cheryl Wong, Nicole Wong and Liane Wong, had taken out the Philippines 36-28 in the semi-finals earlier in the day to book a spot in the final.
"We lost to Vietnam at the last SEA Games (in Myanmar in 2013), and it was really tight so this one was very sweet for us," said Cheryl Wong.
The men, however, suffered a heartbreaking loss in the epee team final. Samson Lee, Lim Wei Wen, Willie Khoo and Aloysius Low were beaten 43-44 by Vietnam.
This takes the fencing team to two golds, three silvers and five bronzes, putting Singapore second on the fencing medal tally behind Vietnam who have six golds.
