WHEN her daughter had to pass on an opportunity to be selected for the SEA Games because of a shoulder injury, archer Low Luan Eng, 45, never thought she would be filling the spot in the women's compound team instead.

But she did well in a selection trial and Low will now join her eldest son Ang Han Teng, 23, to compete for honours at the Kallang Field in June.

"For me, archery is just a way of bonding for the kids... I never thought of competing at the SEA Games.

"(The Archery Association) encouraged me to go for the trial because they needed another compound lady and I was lucky enough to do well for it," said the mother of three.

She had picked up the sport in 2011 as a recreational member of the Telok Blangah Archery Club, three years after her youngest son joined. Shortly after, Low's daughter and husband also came on board, and in 2012, Han Teng became an archer.

In the archery range, the mother and son treat each other as team-mates.

Said Ang: "Our relationship at home is mother and son, but when it comes to archery, we are just team-mates. There's a clear line and we're more serious."

"When we're training, I'm bigger than her. But at home, she's the authority," he added.
