SINGAPORE - The SEA Games cauldron will be located at the Waterfront Plaza at the Singapore Sports Hub, allowing members of the public to get up close and personal with the 19.2m-tall structure.

Designed by DP Architects and made locally, the sculptural art piece was transported overnight on Tuesday and is currently being fitted onto the site outside the National Stadium.

The cauldron takes its inspiration from the helix structure of DNA cells, and signifies the connection among individuals, communities and countries in a unity of aspirations, tying in with the creative concept of the SEA Games' opening ceremony on June 5.

The community will also be involved in a series of initiatives in the journey of the flame, culminating in the torch parade on June 4 and the actual lighting of the cauldron on June 5.

Said Toh Boon Yi, chief of corporate and community outreach of the Singapore SEA Games Organising Committee executive committee: "The lighting of the cauldron signifies the start of the Games and we want to begin the Games with the very people we set out to make the Games about - the community."

There will be community sports festivals organised by the People's Association later this month, giving the public the chance to get a preview of the Games torch. It will include activities such as a mass walk/run and well-wishing sessions for Team Singapore athletes.

Said Colonel Lawrence Lim, chairman of the opening and closing ceremonies: "As one of the highlights of the opening ceremony, the flame will be transported across the Kallang Basin to the National Stadium. The Games torch will be brought into the National Stadium by a number of torch-bearers, and all spectators will be able to see and cheer on our torch-bearers as it makes its way around the stadium."
