School Sports: Catholic High and East Spring emerge victorious in floorball finals

Catholic High School won the National Inter-School Floorball Championships B Division title. But when they trailed Victoria School 0-1 at the end of the first period, it was actually deja vu for the boys.

The C Division tournament in 2013 saw them face the same opponents in the second round, trailing with only a few minutes on the clock.

In that match, Catholic High fought back valiantly to level the game 9-9 at the end. However, their efforts were to no avail and it was Victoria who eventually kicked them out of the competition on points difference.

In spite of the disappointment, it built Catholic High's fighting spirit and according to captain Tan Yan Zhi, it was this mentality that fuelled his team's desire to win.

Proving their belief, Catholic High managed to go one better in Monday's final, held at Yishun Sports Hall. They carved out a 4-2 victory with goals from Geoffrey Kok and Gabriel Chan, the latter having bagged a hat-trick. Ali Mohd Noor scored twice for Victoria.

"I'm really proud of my team. We never gave up," said Yan Zhi. "We kept going because as long as there's time we can get it back."

Earlier in the day, East Spring Secondary School were crowned B Division girls' champions after beating Springfield Secondary School in a closely fought final that ended 3-2.

Winning the title wrapped up a perfect season for the East Spring girls, having won every match throughout the season. It also marks the school's first triumph in the competition.
