‘Nerf wars’ waged using foam blasters are a way for hobbyists to wield their mock weapons in a physically competitive environment. HARIDAS finds out from one group of Nerf players what draws them to the game.

Sweat dripping from his temples, Mr Wong Yi Xian took aim from behind a barricade at Hong Lim Park. “Cover the flanks,” the 19-year-old Nanyang Polytechnic student ordered his four teammates as they advanced, raining foam bullets on the opposition and drawing the attention of curious passers-by.

It was a regular Sunday for these Nerf hobbyists, who gather each week with their foam blasters to engage in “Nerf wars”. A round in a game, which lasts three to five minutes, is won when all of an opposing team are eliminated by being hit with foam bullets.
