Yu Mengyu, playing the first singles, beat Dina Meshref 11-3, 11-6, 11-6 before Feng's 11-4, 9-11, 11-5, 11-4 win over Nadeen El-Dawlatly.

Zhou Yihan, who is competing in only the team event, played her first match at the Olympics when she teamed up with Yu in the doubles. They beat the pairing of Nadeen and Yousra Helmy 11-7, 11-6, 11-4.

The real test for the paddlers begins from the final eight on Saturday morning (Brazil time), where they are likely to meet South Korea.
