SINGAPORE – National badminton mixed doubles duo Terry Hee and Jessica Tan received a boost ahead of their Olympic debut when home-grown financial services company Singlife announced a sponsorship deal with the married couple on June 20.

It is understood that the sponsorship in cash and kind is worth a five-figure sum and will last until the end of the year.

In the announcement, Singlife hailed the world No. 19 pair’s “unwavering determination, dedication and teamwork” as they became

the first Singapore-born mixed-doubles duo to qualify for the Olympics.

Singlife group chief executive officer Pearlyn Phau said: “As a home-grown company, we are incredibly excited to support Terry and Jessica on their Olympic journey.

“Their commitment and inspiring partnership resonate with Singaporeans. Despite setbacks, they have pressed on to qualify for the Olympics and fulfil a dream they have been chasing for years.

“We believe their story exemplifies the can-do spirit that defines our nation, and I’m sure many Singaporeans will be inspired by Terry and Jessica to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small.”

Since they began their partnership in 2014, Hee and Tan persevered through national service commitments, injuries, and personal setbacks to create several milestones.

They won three titles on the Badminton World Federation World Tour and a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal before booking their tickets to the July 26-Aug 11 Paris Olympics.

Tan, 30, who is recovering from a hip injury sustained in their last tournament at the Australian Open earlier in June, said: “We have been working hard to prepare and improve our game.

“I was injured recently, but this will not stop my preparation for Paris. In fact, we will be flying off to train in Denmark in mid-July to better acclimatise in Europe.

“The Olympics have always been a dream for both of us, and we are certainly living our dream now. Singlife’s support means a lot. It gives us an extra boost to make the nation proud on sport’s biggest stage.

“We hope to raise awareness among athletes, young married couples and working adults regarding the importance of financial planning. You never know what unexpected things life is going to throw at you, and it’s best to be as prepared as you can.”

Hee, 28, added: “Singlife’s support is invaluable as we prepare for the biggest challenge of our careers. Over the years, we’ve grown in strength – physically and mentally. With Singlife on our side, we know we’re stronger than ever, and we’ll focus on representing Singapore with pride at the Olympics.

“We are thrilled to be the first Singapore-born badminton players to qualify for the mixed doubles at the Olympics, and we hope to inspire young boys and girls to continue to pursue their sporting passion and to dream big.”
