Magical Gilchrist wins four consecutive English billiards singles gold

SINGAPORE - Peter Gilchrist bagged his second gold medal of the 2015 SEA Games after he defeated Htay Aung 3-0 in the English billiards final on Monday evening - his fourth consecutive triumph in the event after earlier wins in 2009, 2011, 2013.

The Myanmarese never had a chance against Gilchrist, who was in top form and never gave him a chance to fight back, as the defending champion won (101-53, 102-48, 100-16).

"I was lucky I was in top form. Anything less and the other players would have won. I know they are that strong," Gilchrist said.

The 47-year-old Singaporean started his quarter-finals and semi-finals matches slowly but was unstoppable once he found his rhythm.

He initially lost the first frames in the quarters and semis to Indonesia's Jaka Kurniawan and Myanmar's Oo Kyaw respectively but showed his powers of recovery to dispatch them effectively.

Gilchrist will now look forward to Tuesday's men's doubles where he is paired with Chan Keng Kwang - an event that he has never won.

In the men's 9-ball pool singles pre-quarters, Aloysius Yapp defeated Brunei's Ahmad Taufiq Murni 9-4 to advance to the last eight which will be played on Tuesday.
