1 Fierceness
Runner-up to Sierra Leone in this in 2024. He staked his claim to 2025 Classic glory, when overcoming early trouble for a decisive course-and-distance Grade 1 victory in the Pacific Classic Stakes on Aug 31.
2 Baeza
Has found Sovereignty too good on various occasions. But he appears to come off a personal best, delivering a sustained winning charge in the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby (1,800m) at Parx on Sept 20.
3 Nevada Beach
Will not be one of the favourites but respected from the legendary Bob Baffert stable. Strong in the straight when winning the Grade 1 Goodwood Stakes (1,800m) at Santa Anita in on Sept 28.
4 Contrary Thinking
Likely to surge off in front but is completely outclassed in this super quality field.
5 Forever Young
Third in 2024 and got the better of a thrilling battle with Romantic Warrior to win the Group 1 Saudi Cup (1,800m) on Feb 22. Belongs on the shortlist.
6 Sovereignty
Scratched
7 Sierra Leone
Deep closer who surged from off a strong pace to win this in 2024. In top form and chance of a repeat if the gallop is again swift.
8 Mindframe
A dual Grade 1 winner at Churchill Downs in 2025 but hampered and unseated his rider early at Saratoga, an unfortunate trial for this.
9 Journalism
A super consistent 3YO, surviving a rough passage to win the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes (1,900m). But has twice lost to Sovereignty, and last time to Fierceness here.
10 Antiquarian
Has got better and better in 2025. A strong stayer who responded bravely to pressure to win the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes over this trip at Saratoga on Aug 31.
