SINGAPORE - The Singapore women's water polo team gave their all, but ultimately fell to a 4-5 loss to Thailand in the last round-robin match of the tournament to settle for the silver medal on Monday afternoon at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.
Singapore were the defending champions, having won the gold in 2011, the last time women's water polo featured at the biennial multi-sport meet.
Both sides had entered the tie unbeaten with three wins each, and Singapore had needed only a draw to claim the title because they had a superior goal difference.
But it was the Thais who were the dominant side, putting up some stubborn defence to frustrate the hosts.
Thailand goalkeeper Satakamol Wongpairoj was in inspired form, putting up numerous saves to deny the hosts.
In an earlier match, Indonesia beat the Philippines 20-6 to clinch the bronze medal.
