SINGAPORE – Torrential rain has forced the postponement of the Porsche Singapore Classic’s opening round on March 20.

Organisers of the DP World Tour event announced on March 20 that the first round of the US$2.5 million (S$3.3 million) tournament, which is held at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club, will now take place on March 21, with the second round set for March 22.

The first tee-off for the opening round was initially planned for 7.30am, with a field of 132 players split into morning and afternoon waves.

At 6.10am, organisers announced a delay to 12 noon for round one, later stating that those in the afternoon wave would not play on March 20. A subsequent update confirmed that the opening round would be postponed by a day.

On March 19, the tournament’s pro-am event was already cancelled due to heavy downpour.

In response to queries about whether there would be a format change to the tournament, a DP World Tour spokesperson said: “Due to persistent inclement weather, round one of the Porsche Singapore Classic will not commence today and will take place on Friday 21st, with tee times remaining as originally published.

“Round two will take place on Saturday 22nd, with tee times remaining as originally published. The DP World Tour will continue to monitor conditions ahead of round one.”

For the event not to be cancelled, a minimum of 36 holes will need to be played.

The National Environment Agency had previously warned of a

monsoon surge from March 19 to 21,

which could bring temperatures to as low as 22 deg C, along with moderate to heavy showers.

World No. 14 Robert MacIntyre is headlining the field at the Singapore Classic. Also in town for the tournament are 2016 PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker and three-time Ryder Cup champion Paul Casey.

Singapore’s sole representative at the event is

17-year-old student Brayden Lee,

who earned his spot after finishing as the top local amateur at the qualifying event in February.

This is the third edition of the Singapore Classic. The inaugural edition was won by South African Ockie Strydom, followed by Sweden’s Jesper Svensson in 2024.

The DP World Tour, formerly known as the European Tour, first came to Singapore in 1993.

The inaugural tournament was won by Nick Faldo, with fellow Major champions Vijay Singh and Adam Scott also winning subsequent DP World Tour events in Singapore.
