SINGAPORE - The Singapore Junior Masters will be back for its fourth edition at the Laguna National Golf Resort Club from Sept 30 to Oct 2 after a year-long hiatus.
Boasting the region’s most promising young golfers, the tournament is expecting a field of 132 players from Thailand, China, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Singapore.
They will compete across five categories: Under-18, Under-16, Under-13, Under-11 and Under-9.
The event was not held in 2023 as promoter LLD Sports was focused on the Singapore Ladies Masters.
Lyn Yeo, founder of LLD Sports, said: “Developing and promoting the junior golf scene in the region has always been one of our missions.
“Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, we decided to launch the Singapore Junior Masters so that our juniors could have the opportunity to compete and sharpen their game amid the various social distancing challenges posed then.”
Shannon Tan, who in June became the first Singapore golfer to qualify for the Olympics,
The 20-year-old retained her title the next year, before Hong Kong’s Arianna Lau won it in 2022.
Singaporeans Sean Lee and Brandon Han won the boys’ title in 2021 and 2022 respectively, while Irish-American James Jay Healy was victorious in the inaugural edition.
Yeo said: “Shannon, who was only 16 then, showed us a glimpse of her talent when she won the inaugural title. We are all excited that she’s going to be Singapore’s flag bearer for golf at the Olympics.
“With the return of the Singapore Junior Masters in September, we can only look forward to witnessing more of such quality players like Shannon coming through the ranks.”
An international qualifier for the event will also be held at the Caliraya Springs Golf Club (Aug 10-11) and Sherwood Hills Golf Club (Aug 25) in the Philippines.
