SINGAPORE - The 2018 Community Youth Golf League marks a homecoming of sorts as it returns to the Laguna National Golf and Country Club, where its parent Youth Golf Programme (YGP) was launched 21 years ago.

The second of the league's four legs this year will be played on Monday (May 28) on Laguna's Masters course, with the YGP also getting a boost from Laguna in the form of Sunday afternoon slots on the course.

Orchid Country Club hosted the first leg in March, and subsequent legs will alternate between Laguna and Orchid.

"We are very pleased to be going back to Laguna, as it gives the children in the programme more opportunities to play and more exposure to different courses," said YGP chairman Janice Khoo on Sunday.

"With the Sunday afternoon slots, we're also thinking of organising a monthly medal competition from June to September, depending on the school schedule."

The YGP aims to give youth golfers who do not have golf club memberships opportunities to learn and play golf with their peers.

The programme, which began in 1997, is the brainchild of the late Tay Cheng Khoon, a former sports editor of The Straits Times.

It currently has 142 participating golfers across four proficiency levels.

Laguna's executive director Kevin Kwee said reaching out to the YGP was only to be expected given the club's history of supporting junior golf.

"On weekdays, even if the kids rush down after school they can probably only do nine holes," he said.

"We do have some extra weekend spots and the junior golfers are our future after all. They should have the opportunity to play the full 18 holes and we can make it easier for them to do so."
