Billy Horschel will undergo right hip surgery next week and miss months of PGA Tour competition, he announced on May 6.

In a statement posted on X, Horschel offered a timeline that would force him to miss the three remaining Major tournaments of 2025.

He said he decided to have the surgery, which will be performed in Colorado, after consultation with medical experts and his team.

“It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar but this is a preventative measure,” he said.

“I’m already itching to start rehab, get back to practising and I look forward to returning to the course sometime around late summer/early fall.”

An eight-time PGA Tour champion, his most recent win came in April 2024 at the Corales Puntacana Championship in the Dominican Republic.

Horschel, 38, has played in 12 events in 2025, missing the cut in five of them, including the Masters. His best finish was joint-fourth in March at the Valspar Championship, one of his two top-10 finishes this season.

He last played at the RBC Heritage in late April, finishing tied-27th.

Horschel is ranked No. 24 in the world golf rankings and No. 58 in the FedEx Cup standings.

This spring, he was part of the Atlanta Drive GC team that won the inaugural championship of the tech-driven TGL.

Also suffering a setback is Jason Day. The world No. 32 has withdrawn from this week’s Truist Championship for an undisclosed reason, the PGA Tour announced on May 6.

The former Major champion was replaced in the field in Philadelphia by Patrick Rodgers.

Day, 37, was forced to withdraw from the Players Championship in March due to an illness. The Australian has since tied for eighth at the Masters, along with a T27 at the Houston Open and a T49 at the RBC Heritage.

The Truist Championship is the sixth of eight signature events in 2025, featuring a US$20 million (S$25.8 million) purse.

However, the tournament will also be without world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who is skipping the event to focus on next week’s PGA Championship.

Featuring at the year’s second Major will be Dustin Johnson.

The LIV Golf member will be at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to the list of participants that was revealed on May 6.

Johnson is a two-time Major winner, coming out on top in the 2016 US Open and the 2020 Masters. His Masters win allowed him to participate in the next five PGA Championships regardless of qualification status, but that exemption ended in 2024.

The 40-year-old’s inclusion in the field means he received a special exemption from the PGA of America, which oversees the event.

Other LIV Golf members who were listed in the field include Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed and Cameron Smith. REUTERS
