BAKU - McLaren's Formula One world championship leader Oscar Piastri crashed out of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on the opening lap on Sunday.

The Australian, last year's winner in Baku, had lined up ninth but dropped to last after apparently jumping the start with the anti-stall seemingly clicking in.

He then locked up and smashed into the wall at turn five, ending his streak of 34 successive finishes and scoring in every race this season.

Piastri had started the race with a 31 point lead over teammate Lando Norris, who started seventh. McLaren had hoped to clinch their second successive constructors' title with seven rounds to spare but that now looked unlikely. REUTERS
