Manchester City taking on Liverpool has been the prime English football fixture for much of the last decade but their Feb 23 meeting carries a sense of change. Not just because Arne Slot, not Jurgen Klopp, will lead Liverpool at the Etihad, either. City, too, are regenerating. They appear in a frightful rush to do so.

Their defeat at Real Madrid on Feb 19 felt era-defining in its meek surrender. That Kevin de Bruyne was an unused substitute was symbolic. Two days later, Guardiola, in so many words, all but ended the brilliant Belgian’s glittering City career.
