SINGAPORE – The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup will return on Aug 17 with Malaysia Super League team Selangor facing a Singapore Selection side at the iconic Merdeka Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
In a media statement on July 26, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) said the event, last held in 2019, will also feature a match between veteran footballers of Selangor and Singapore.
Established in 2001, the Cup was previously an annual friendly match that celebrates the football ties between Singapore and Selangor which dates back to the days of the Malaysia Cup era.
At the last edition in 2019, Selangor lifted the Cup following a 1-0 win in front of 54,920 fans at the Shah Alam Stadium.
Teo Hock Seng, FAS vice-president and co-chairman for the event, said: “As we eagerly anticipate the return of the Sultan of Selangor Cup after a four-year hiatus, this event symbolises the rich historical rivalry between Singapore and Selangor.
“I am thrilled to witness both teams renewing their friendly competition on the pitch. To all fans of Selangor and Singapore, this occasion not only celebrates our shared passion for football but also brings together generations of players and fans alike.
“Let us unite at Merdeka Stadium, creating unforgettable memories and cheering our teams as one football family.”
Supporters interested in catching the match may sign up from now until 12pm on Aug 13 for complimentary two-way transportation and match tickets on a first come, first served basis, while Singapore Premier League (SPL) fans can register through their respective clubs.
