It feels strange to declare that the club who lost a godhead manager is still far more stable than the club who retained their manager after he delivered them trophy success. And yet that’s the state of play between Liverpool and Manchester United ahead of their latest summit meeting.
Arne Slot’s start at Liverpool has been calm and collected, riding out tailwinds against both Ipswich Town and Brentford to deliver twin 2-0 wins. There was a brief flicker of rancour with Trent Alexander-Arnold last week, but this saw the player himself deferring to a new sheriff in town: “If you don’t comply with those rules, you won’t play – it’s as simple as that.”
