Financial reality bites in the football transfer business. Once clubs were forced to concentrate on profit and sustainability (PSR), much of the air was taken out of the circus big top that the market previously was. That isn’t to rule out surprise moves as the January window closes on Feb 3 evening (Feb 4 morning, Singapore time), necessity will always be the mother of invention, and someone is always willing to take risks.

The revelation that Arsenal had bid £65 million (S$101 million) for

was untimely, not least because it came in the hours before Villa played Celtic in a vital Champions League match.
