Singapore- The LionsXII succumbed to another defeat on the road after going down 1-2 to Sarawak in a Malaysian Super League (MSL) clash at the Sarawak Stadium in Kuching- a result that ended their chances of finishing in the top four of the 12-team MSL table.
This was the LionsXII's final away match of their league campaign and a chance to slightly improve their dismal away record. Their latest loss means that Fandi Ahmad's charges have won once in 11 away matches, with three draws and seven defeats.
Ultimately it was two first-half set pieces that proved to be the LionsXII's kryptonite.
In the 23rd minute, Ivan Fatic's corner was met by an unmarked Patrick Gerhardt at the near post. The Liberian powered his header past Izwan Mahbud in goal.
And in the 39th minute, Sarawak scored a carbon copy of their earlier goal with Ivan Fatic's corner met by the head of Billy Mehmet.
Khairul Amri did give the LionsXII a lifeline when he successfully converted a 75th-minute penalty, after he was brought down by goalkeeper Mohd Fadzley but ultimately Sarawak rode out the remaining minutes to secure their victory. The LionsXII will close out their league campaign with a home tie against Sime Darby on Saturday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
