Football: Ex-nationals take on Singapore Parliament team at inaugural futsal tournament

SINGAPORE - The Republic's highly celebrated ex-national footballers such as Terry Pathmanathan will take on a team comprising members of parliament such as Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin at The Arena located at Woodleigh Park on Sunday (July 2).

The exhibition match will be a key highlight in Tamil-language daily newspaper Tamil Murasu's (TM) inaugural five-a-side futsal tournament for kids between 10 to 12 years old.

A total of 24 teams, comprising up to eight players and a manager each, have signed up for this tournament and will play in group stages followed by knockout rounds leading to the final.

The winning team will be presented with the S. Chandra Das Cup - named after Singapore's high commissioner to Sri Lanka and chairman of TM who is also the event's guest of honour - while teams that finish third and fourth in each group will play for the plate championship.

The tournament, sanctioned by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), aims to promote sports and fitness by encouraging more Indian youths to take up futsal. Through the event, youths can build their leadership skills and develop team bonding among fellow participants.

The event will also see national football team coach V. Sundram Moorthy in a meet-and-greet session with the participants.
