Former clubs of Spanish midfielder Nico Hidalgo paid tribute on Saturday after he died from lung cancer, aged 32.

Hidalgo played 73 times for Racing Santander between 2018 and 2020 and also had spells with Cadiz and Granada.

He joined Juventus in 2014 but never played a league game, being loaned back to Granada before another loan move to Cadiz.

After joining Extramadura in 2020 he was diagnosed with cancer the following year, leading to his retirement.

Santander said his death was an "irreparable loss", while Granada said: "With Nico's departure, not only is an excellent footballer gone, but also a great person.

"But the affection of his team mates, coaches, workers, directors and fans will always be present."

In a statement on X, Cadiz added: "We will never forget your smile and your joy. Your fight is our inspiration. Rest in peace," while Extramadura added: "We want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. We send you all our love and strength in these difficult times." REUTERS
