LONDON – Liverpool have reportedly agreed a British record fee of £125 million (S$217.1 million) to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, with the deal set to be completed on a frantic final day of the summer transfer window.
The Sweden striker is understood to have arrived at the club’s training ground on Sept 1, with a protracted saga nearing an end.
With the Premier League’s window due to shut at 7pm in the UK (2am on Sept 2 in Singapore), there are a number of big deals yet to be done as clubs scramble to boost their squads.
To offset the loss of Isak, Newcastle have reportedly agreed a £55 million deal to sign Brentford forward Yoane Wissa.
Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is set for a move to Manchester City after being told he was surplus to requirements at Paris Saint-Germain.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have agreed a deal to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on a five-year contract for £18.1 million plus add-ons, according to British media reports.
They had also been heavily linked with Aston Villa’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as they seek a solution to their goalkeeping crisis, after a difficult start to the season between the posts for both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir.
But all eyes will be on the expected finalising of Isak’s move to Liverpool.
The Anfield club had a £110 million offer rejected in August and since then, the 25-year-old has not trained with or played for Newcastle.
He is set to become Liverpool’s eighth first-team signing of the summer window, marking the second time they have broken their own transfer record following the capture of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £100 million.
The club’s outlay now stands at an eye-watering figure of around £416 million, though there have also been significant departures including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Arne Slot’s side, who beat Arsenal 1-0 on Aug 31
British media reported that the Reds have agreed a £35 million deal to sign the 25-year-old.
On Aug 30, Newcastle signed German international striker Nick Woltemade for a club record fee reported to be worth up to £69 million.
That paved the way for the potential exit of Isak, who scored 27 goals for Eddie Howe’s team in all competitions last season.
Wissa, who has already been the subject of bids from Newcastle, on Aug 31 urged Brentford to “keep their word” and allow him to leave before the transfer deadline.
Now it appears the Democratic Republic of Congo forward, who scored 19 Premier League goals last season, has his wish, giving Saudi-owned Newcastle extra firepower as they prepare for their Champions League campaign.
Donnarumma, who won the Champions League with PSG in May, is poised to join City, with the Premier League club understood to have agreed a fee of around €35 millions (S$52.6 million).
Ederson, City’s long-serving Brazilian goalkeeper, is believed to be on the radar of Turkish side Fenerbahce.
United are said to have agreed a deal for unwanted Brazil winger Antony to join Real Betis in a €25 million package.
Media reports say that Unai Emery’s Villa, who completed the signing of former United defender Victor Lindelof, have agreed loan deals for United winger Jadon Sancho and Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.
Sancho, 25, has fallen well short of expectations since making a £73 million move to join United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021.
United’s Danish attacker Rasmus Hojlund could also leave Old Trafford, with Italian champions Napoli keen to sign him on loan, with an obligation to buy if they qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Transfer action at Arsenal has concerned outgoings. Winger Reiss Nelson is reportedly close to leaving for Brentford, while Albert Sambi Lokonga and Fabio Vieira look set to join Hamburg.
Their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal with PSG to loan forward Randal Kolo Muani, according to The Athletic.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of Brazilian goalkeeper John Victor from Botafogo, with Strasbourg wide man Dilane Bakwa set for a medical, while Palace are in advanced talks to sign attacker Christantus Uche from Getafe. AFP, REUTERS
