Fitness: A step forward in encouraging a healthier nation

Sport Singapore has just released an additional function in its existing ActiveSG app as part of its inaugural GetActive! Singapore fitness campaign. Labelled the Active Challenge, the extension serves as a nation-wide interactive platform encouraging Singaporeans to take a collective 51 million steps in celebration of Singapore's 51st birthday.

The app features a built-in step-counter that tracks the number of steps each user takes in a day, as well as a leader board showing where each user stands against other Singaporeans. The challenge is two-fold - users who have achieved weekly targets and personal milestones will be rewarded with free gym or swim passes at ActiveSG sport centres, while the top three users who have accumulated the most number of steps stand a chance to win Apple watches. The competitive period lasts from July 30 to Aug 9.

"We want to create an opportunity every year to use sport as a vehicle to participate in National Day celebrations," said Lim Teck Yin, CEO of Sport Singapore.

The Active Challenge also takes on a corporate spin - colleagues can team up and challenge other teams within the company or of other participating companies, with the team amassing the highest combined total number of steps in the running to win Apple watches. StarHub and Singapore Press Holdings are the two companies who have risen to the challenge so far.

Other aspects of the campaign include the biennial Singapore National Games, which will showcase a total of 10,349 able-bodied and para athletes competing across 21 sports. The Games, which commenced on July 24 and ends on Aug 7, will take place at 15 different locations across the country.

The campaign also supports ground-up sports initiatives from organisers at the community or corporate level. As part of the Active Enabler programme, firms or community centres can send in proposals to Sport Singapore for internal or mass participation activities encouraging Singaporeans to adopt healthier lifestyles. Out of the 443 submissions received, 243 have been approved and endorsed under the Active Enabler scheme, with the activities running from July 30 to Aug 7.
