SINGAPORE - Deloitte has been appointed as the first official sponsor for this year's Asean Para Games at a ceremony on Tuesday morning at the Sports Hub Library.

The professional services company has pledged more than $500,000 worth in sponsorship to the Para Games, which will be held in the Republic for the first time.

It will also be providing assistance in marketing, risk management as well as in the provision of Games volunteers.

Sponsorship of major sporting events in Singapore is nothing new to Deloitte. It had previously backed the 2010 Youth Olympic Games and last month's SEA Games.

Said Deloitte Singapore chief executive Philip Yuen: "This partnership with the Asean Para Games underscores Deloitte's commitment in encouraging more youths with disabilities to get in touch with sports.

"It also signifies the start to our long-term focus towards helping Singapore build a more inclusive society in which people with disabilities are empowered to reach their potential and be integral members of the society."

Singapore Asean Para Games Organising Committee (Sapgoc) chairman Lim Teck Yin said that target amount of sponsorships is set at $5 million, and added: "We are confident of hitting the target because what we have seen this year is an upswelling of pride and ownership for the sports events that we have been staging.

"I want as many companies as possible from the private sectors to come on board no matter what funds they bring on to the table. It will be fully appreciated."

The 8th edition of the Para Games will be held from Dec 3-9. It will feature 15 sports and Singapore will field its largest ever contingent with about 100 para-athletes.
