SINGAPORE – Representing the nation at the international level for the first time did little to unsettle youth bowler Carine Foo as she was crowned girls’ singles champion at the Asian Junior Tenpin Bowling Championships in Jakarta on Aug 24.
At the Aug 21-30 event held at the Jaya Ancol Bowling Center, the 18-year-old topped the 36-strong field with a total of 1,189 pinfalls after six games.
Teammate Nura Salsabila Zulkifli – the winner in this event in 2024 – also delivered a strong performance, finishing third with 1,144 pinfalls to secure the bronze medal behind Sharifa Askander of Kuwait (1,147 pinfalls).
Foo, a Singapore Bowling Federation national development squad player, said of her first major victory: “This competition is definitely different from the others as it was my first time representing Singapore. I had the opportunity to learn about how bowlers from different countries approach the game and the different bowling styles they have.
“This is also my first major title representing my country, while my previous wins came from Open competitions. Those experiences gave me valuable exposure and helped prepare me for the Asian Junior Bowling Championships.”
She added: “For this competition, we were trained to focus on learning about the lanes so that I can apply this knowledge to future competitions. Winning a medal for Singapore is a bonus on top of the game management skills and experience I have gained today.”
With her maiden major title secured, Foo hopes to be able to climb the ranks.
“In the near future, I hope to progress into the national training squad and eventually the national squad so that I can continue representing Singapore in more competitions and bring glory to Singapore alongside my teammates,” said the Raffles Institution student.
“This win has also reminded me to stay humble and maintain a learning mindset so that I can continue improving both as a bowler and as a person.”
The 25th edition of the championships is being held in Indonesia for the fourth time with 89 boys and 36 girls from 15 federations vying for glory.
Singapore is represented by 12 athletes at the event. The boys and girls’ doubles events will be held on Aug 25, followed by the team of four on Aug 26 and 27. The boys and girls’ Masters finals will be held on Aug 28 and 29.
