LOS ANGELES – Josh Hart said the New York Knicks showed how far they have progressed since last season, as he delivered his second straight triple-double and Karl-Anthony Towns scored 31 points in a 119-103 triumph over the Utah Jazz on Jan 1, their ninth straight National Basketball Association (NBA) win.
With leading scorer Jalen Brunson sidelined with tightness in his right calf and Miles McBride also absent, Towns and Hart picked up the slack.
Hart did not score until the final seconds of the first half, yet still finished with a triple-double.
He said: “We have great depth. We’ve got guys that can score the ball. It just shows the difference between last year and this year.
“Last year, (with Brunson) out, I’m not sure how that would have gone... But with him out, we still got the depth of KAT (Karl-Anthony Towns), ’Kal (Mikal Bridges), OG (Anunoby) and those guys are very good at scoring the ball.”
Towns added 21 rebounds and Hart scored 15 points with 14 rebounds and 12 assists, Bridges chipped in with 27 points.
All-Star centre Towns became just the third Knicks player in history – joining Hall of Famers Bob McAdoo and Patrick Ewing – to record at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in three consecutive games.
Rookie Tyler Kolek, who produced 36 points and 11 assists while playing almost 40 minutes earlier on Jan 1 for the G-League Westchester Knicks, added two points and four assists in over 12 minutes for his parent club, after being pressed into duty by the injuries to Brunson and McBride.
“Over the course of a season, whether it’s injury, illness, foul trouble – you need everybody,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said of their ability to surge despite being short-handed.
“As a team, if you prioritise winning and doing what’s best for the group, that’s what makes it enjoyable,” he said. “You have everyone committed to each other. When you do that, good things come from that.”
Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson scored 25 points apiece for Utah, but the Jazz suffered a fifth straight defeat.
In Detroit, the Pistons beat the Orlando Magic 105-96 but saw guard Jaden Ivey go down with what looked like a serious leg injury early in the fourth quarter.
Ivey collided with Magic guard Cole Anthony as they scrambled for a loose ball, Ivey collapsing to the court and holding his lower left leg. He was stretchered off the court.
“To see something like that – it’s devastating for the whole group,” teammate Tobias Harris told NBA Network after the game. “Obviously, it’s a big win for us, but after the game, it’s just the group coming together in prayer.”
Ivey was enjoying an outstanding night, scoring 22 points to lead the way as all five Pistons starters scored in double figures.
In Toronto, the Raptors, buoyed by the return of Immanuel Quickley, halted their 11-game losing streak with a 130-113 victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
Scottie Barns scored 33 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Quickley – who missed 22 games with a torn elbow ligament – added 21 points and 15 assists.
In Washington, Jordan Poole returned from a two-game injury absence and scored 30 points to propel the Wizards to a 125-107 victory over the Chicago Bulls.
Poole connected on 10 of his 21 attempts from the field and drilled six of Washington’s 17 three-pointers.
The Miami Heat, fuelled by 32 points from Tyler Herro along with 23 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds from Bam Adebayo, led wire-to-wire in a 119-108 win over the visiting New Orleans Pelicans.
Trey Murphy III scored 34 points to lead the Pelicans, who were playing with heavy hearts after at least 15 people were killed in New Orleans in an attack authorities are investigating as an act of terrorism.
Denver’s NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic notched his league-leading 13th triple-double of the season, scoring 23 points with 17 rebounds and 15 assists in the Nuggets’ 139-120 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.
Jokic had almost secured a triple-double by half-time with 13 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists and, with victory in their grasp, sat out the entire fourth quarter. AFP, REUTERS
