Asean Para Games: Thailand clinches 3-a-side wheelchair basketball gold

SINGAPORE - Thailand's three-a-side wheelchair basketball team clinched the Asean Para Games gold medal on Tuesday afternoon at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The team made quick work of Malaysia with a 15-5 win, with team captain Aekkasit Jumjarean scoring nine points.

"I am very happy with our win today. We played well according to our coach's plan," said Aekkasit.

The team's man-to-man defence strategy proved effective, as they restricted the Malaysian players from racing forward, forcing them into making numerous shot-clock violations.

According to Aekkasit, the team trained three sessions of about 10 hours every day in their four-month preparation for the Asean Para Games.

The veterans on the team have also played together for 20 years, while the rookies have joined them for two to three years.

The three-a-side team are also part of the five-a-side team, and they hope to win a second gold medal in the five-a-side final on Wednesday.

In the bronze medal play-off, the Philippines beat Myanmar 15-11.
