(REUTERS) - Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was one of two people killed early on Sunday (Feb 4) after being struck by a suspected drunken driver, Indiana State Police said.
Jackson, 26, previously played for the Arizona Cardinals. He was signed by the Colts in January 2016 after signing to the practice squad the previous month.
He was placed on injured reserve in September 2017. The crash happened shortly before 4am local time along I-70, according to the Indianapolis Star.
Police said Jackson and Jeffrey Monroe, 54, were standing near a stopped vehicle when a pickup truck drove onto the highway shoulder and struck them both.
Police believe that Monroe was driving and had pulled to the side of the road and got out of the car to assist Jackson, who became ill.
The Colts released a statement on Jackson's death.
"It is with a heavy heart that we share the loss of one of our own," the team wrote.
"Edwin Jackson always brought a smile to our locker room and the community. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time. We will miss him greatly."
The driver, identified as Indianapolis resident Alex Cabrera Gonsales, 37, was taken into custody after a brief chase on foot, police said.
Gonsales was taken to the Marion County Jail where he remains in custody.
