Rain washed out the second New Zealand-Australia T20 international at Mount Maunganui on Friday, leaving the visitors retaining the bilateral Chappell-Hadlee Trophy.
Having been reduced to nine overs per innings after a delayed start, the match was abandoned after 2.1 overs at Bay Oval with Australia 16 for one.
Australia won the series opener by six wickets at the same venue on Wednesday.
The third and final match is also at Bay Oval on Saturday.
With the rain denying the hosts a chance to level the series, Australia extended their hold on the trophy to five years.
"The trophy ... holds a lot of history for both teams," said Australia captain Mitchell Marsh.
"We certainly came here to try to win it so there's still lots to play for tomorrow." REUTERS
