JOHANNESBURG - Griquas won South Africa’s Currie Cup for the first time in 55 years with a last-gasp penalty to beat hosts Lions 27-25 at Ellis Park on Saturday.

George Whitehead put over a long-range penalty with the final kick of the game to win it, denying the heavily fancied Lions their first trophy in 10 years.

Both teams scored three tries and it came down to the kicking boot of Whitehead after Griquas won a penalty in the last minute.

The domestic competition is one of the oldest rugby competitions, with the first games played in 1889, and Saturday’s victory was only the fourth time the team from Kimberley had won the competition, after previous success in 1899, 1911 and 1970. REUTERS
