A construction worker died on Saturday after being hit by pieces of concrete during excavation work.

Bangladeshi national Ratul Dewan Jamal Dewan, 23, was working for Yong Xing Construction in Sunview Way, off Pioneer Road, when the incident happened.

Mr A. K. M. Mohsin, executive director of migrant workers group Dibashram, said Mr Ratul had been working with the company for about a month. He was not married, and was the oldest of three children, Mr Mohsin added.

Mr Mohsin, who is also the editor-in-chief of Bengali-language Singapore newspaper Banglar Kantha, said he met Mr Ratul's uncle and cousin, who also work here. Mr Ratul's body will be flown back to Bangladesh today.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said it was informed of the incident on Saturday.

An MOM spokesman said officers from its Occupational Safety and Health Inspectorate responded immediately to investigate the accident.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call to the site at about 9pm. SCDF personnel took two workers to hospital - one suffered trauma injuries, while the other was feeling pain in his right knee and left shoulder.

The MOM has instructed all excavation operations within the worksite to be stopped.

Investigations are ongoing.
