The TLDR: Is love really in the air? This Valentine’s Day, young people share the worst and best dates they have ever been on, from romantic picnics to staring at phones throughout the meal.

The Worst

Third wheel to a screen

“We were at McDonald’s. I wanted to talk to him, but he wouldn’t talk to me properly. I got pretty annoyed because he was using his phone at the table. I remember bringing this up. But I don’t think he found it wrong. It wasn’t even (other) girls, I’m pretty sure it was (random) stuff. Like, I’m more interesting than that.” — Ms Shahina Sirajuden, 19, Temasek Polytechnic

A bad first impression

Mr Tarick Yap’s date made him wait for three hours.

“I’ve never met her before, so it was the first date. We were planning to go somewhere fancy, but she made me wait for three hours, and she also came in a T-shirt with shorts and slippers which was a very bad (sloppy) look. It gave a bad impression.” — Mr Tarick Yap Jun Kai, 19, ITE College Central

“The worst date I’ve been on was when I had dinner with my ex-boyfriend. He collected our food and slammed it on the table and I had to eat almost everything. He was using his phone the whole time. I was talking to him, asking him what he was doing and he just ignored me. I was crying while other people were staring at me. We broke up like one week after that. I think he lost feelings because he found another girlfriend one week later.” — Ms Nurul Syazwani Mohamad Azlan, 18, Temasek Polytechnic

“I (got to know) my boyfriend online. When I first met him, we went to Lakeside Garden and walked around… It felt like a very successful date. Thank god I didn’t get scammed. Now we’re nearing our sixth year anniversary.” — Ms Clarissa Laura Chin, 18, ITE Central

A day together

Mr Jovin Tan’s girlfriend said she loved him after the date.

“The best date that I had so far was when I took (my girlfriend) out to go shopping, to Orchard. (We went to the) museum and went sightseeing. After we went out the whole day, I took her home, and then she told me ‘I love you’. That kind of hit my heart.” — Mr Jovin Tan, 18, ITE central

“On my birthday, my boyfriend surprised me with handmade pipe cleaner flowers and a picnic to see the lights at MBS. It was super cute. He carried everything even though it was very heavy.” — Ms Melody Wee, 18, Nanyang Polytechnic
