Wetter weather likely in next 2 weeks

Expect wetter weather in the next fortnight, said the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) yesterday.

Short thundery showers are expected on five to seven days over the next two weeks, mostly in the late morning and afternoon. Widespread thundery showers with occasional gusty winds are likely to be seen on two or three days, typically in the morning or pre-dawn hours.

The overall rainfall for the whole month is also expected to be above average for most parts of Singapore.

Despite the rainy weather, the days will remain warm with temperatures likely to be between 25 and 34 deg C.

"The nights can be relatively warm, in particular on non-rain days," said the MSS.

"The warm days and nights typically occur when the south-east winds are light and bring warm, humid air from the sea towards the land."

South-west monsoon conditions have prevailed over Singapore and the surrounding region since the start of the month, and are expected to last until September.

During this season, low-level winds are forecast to blow from the south-east or south-west.

At the Changi climate station, night-time temperatures on most days this month ranged between 26 and 28.3 deg C. This was due to warm, humid air over the sea being blown towards land. That range was well above the long-term climatological June mean minimum temperature of 25.4 degrees.

The highest temperature recorded in June so far was 35 deg C on June 6, at the Marina Barrage area. In addition, most parts of Singapore received more rainfall than usual this month.
