SINGAPORE – The Republic’s long-awaited Olympic medallist is set to touch down at Changi Airport on Aug 13, and all his supporters are invited to the party.

Maximilian Maeder, who won Singapore’s first sailing medal at the Games and the country’s first medal since Rio 2016, and fellow Olympian Ryan Lo, who competed in the men’s dinghy event, are scheduled to land at 6am.

Drumming up support in a Facebook post, Singapore’s sailing community invited fans to “get up close and personal” with the sailors after their Flight SQ335 touches down.

It is not clear which terminal the duo will show up at, but the SingaporeSailing Facebook page said the details will be updated closer to the date.

Seventeen-year-old Maeder, who became the

youngest Singaporean to win an Olympic medal by bagging the bronze

last week, is expected to join the celebratory parade in town on Aug 14.

Everyone is invited to show their support for the Olympians, who will be ferried on an open-top bus through Bayfront Avenue, Chinatown, Orchard Road, Serangoon Road and Victoria Street from 11.30am to 1pm.

Among the 23-athlete Paris contingent were Teh Xiu Hong, who secured

Singapore shooting’s best Olympic showing

by placing 12th in the women’s 25m pistol, and swimmer Gan Ching Hwee,

who broke national records in the women’s 800m

and 1,500m freestyle.

Fifteen of these Olympians had competed in the Games for the first time, four of whom are still teenagers.

Five stops will be set up along the route for onlookers to cheer for the athletes and their efforts after two weeks of intense competition. There will be no pit stops in between.

Encouraging Singaporeans to show up with their flags, Sport Singapore in an Instagram post said: “Mark your calendars and let’s show our Olympians just how much their dedication and hard work mean to all of us!”
