SINGAPORE - Ms Maria Kropyvianska waits anxiously in her Newton flat every morning to receive confirmation over WhatsApp that her parents in Ukraine are safe.

The 31-year-old's parents are currently in Vasylkiv, a small Ukrainian city where an oil depot was hit by missiles on Feb 27 and whose military airfield Russian forces have tried to seize.
