SINGAPORE – Two people were taken to hospital after they were hit by a falling tree while travelling in bad weather on the SLE on the night of Oct 24.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a road traffic accident on the SLE towards CTE, before the Lentor Avenue Exit, at about 10.10pm that day.

Two people were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, SCDF said.

The National Environment Agency had issued an alert at 9.21pm on Oct 24, warning people to expect heavy rain over many areas of Singapore from 9.45pm to 11.15pm.

Dashcam footage posted on Facebook shows three motorcycles travelling on the right-most lane of an expressway in the rain.

A tree in the central divider then falls onto the right-most lane.

A motorcyclist appears to be hit by the tree and bumps into the central divider.

Another motorcyclist, however, is hit by the falling tree and falls off the motorcycle after losing control of the vehicle.

Sparks can also be seen coming from the motorcycle.

Separately, Shin Min Daily News reported on Oct 25 that the trunk of a large tree in Jalan Besar broke and fell, almost hitting several nearby cyclists.

The Chinese-language daily reported that the incident had happened at about 10pm on Oct 24.

Quoting an eyewitness, the report stated that it was raining in the area at the time of the incident.

The weatherman had earlier said that

Sumatra squalls might bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds

in the pre-dawn hours and mornings on some days for the rest of October.

Correction note: In an earlier version of the story, we said that PUB had issued the weather alert. It should be the National Environment Agency. This has been corrected. We are sorry for the error.
