SINGAPORE - To mark the historic Trump-Kim summit and Singapore's role as host, the Singapore Mint on Tuesday (June 5) unveiled three commemorative gold, silver and base-metal medallions.

Each medallion features an affirmative handshake between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who are set to meet in the Republic on June 12.

Both countries will also have their national flags minted on the medallion, with North Korea's national flag placed on the left and US' on the right, "aptly representing both countries' position on the political spectrum", Singapore Mint said in a statement.

The national flags on only the 1 ounce 999 fine silver medallion will be in colour application. It will be priced at $118.

The 1/2 ounce 999.9 fine gold medallion will cost $1,380, while the base-metal version with nickel-plated zinc will be priced at $36.

The medallions are minted with high-relief minting technique, and will carry the scheduled summit date (12.06.18) and the words "Summit in Singapore" on the same side.

The reverse design of each medallion will feature a peace dove that "embodies the significance of the summit to bring about world peace", Singapore Mint said.

It will also be minted with the national flowers of the US and North Korea, which are the rose and magnolia sieboldii respectively.

Singapore Mint initially planned to release 1,000 pieces of the gold medallion and 10,000 pieces of the silver medallion. Due to "overwhelming response", it announced on Tuesday afternoon that it will increase the numbers to 3,000 and 15,000 respectively.

From Tuesday, the public can pre-order the medallions at Singapore Mint retail outlets and its e-store at www.singaporemint.com

South Korea's Poongsan Hwadong has been appointed the exclusive distributor for international sales.

In May, the White House communications agency struck a commemorative coin featuring Mr Trump and Mr Kim in profile facing each other in front of a background of US and North Korean flags.

The words "Peace Talks" are emblazoned at the top and the date "2018" below.

The back of the coin features a picture of the White House, Air Force One and the Seal of the President of the United States.
