SINGAPORE – A man in transit at Changi Airport was arrested on Jan 28 on suspicion of stealing from a shop there before boarding a flight there days earlier.

In a statement on Feb 3, the police said they were alerted to a case of shop theft at the transit area of Terminal 2 on Jan 23.

A tie clip valued at $480 was discovered missing from the retail shop.

CCTV footage showed the man slipping the tie clip into his left pocket and leaving the shop without paying.

The identity of the 25-year-old Indian national was later established, but he had already left Singapore.

On Jan 28, the man returned to Singapore while in transit at Changi Airport. He was arrested by the police, who recovered the stolen tie clip from his possessions.

The man will be charged in court on Feb 4 and could face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both.

This is not the first time foreigners have been caught on suspicion of theft at Changi Airport.

In a recent case, a 62-year-old woman from India was arrested on Dec 23, 2024, after allegedly

stealing

worth more than $1,100 at the airport before her flight.

On Dec 5, 2024, a man and a woman – both identified as foreigners aged 22 by the police – were nabbed for allegedly

stealing 10 perfume bottles worth more than $2,600

at Changi Airport.
