Taxis fare better than private-hire cars during pandemic
Rides booked on phone saw steeper fall than street hails during tightened measures

When Singapore implemented tightened measures in May to address a surge in Covid-19 cases, point-to-point ridership took a hit. But while rides that were booked on the phone - mostly for private-hire cars - dropped by 22 per cent to 744,000 a day, street hails - which are restricted to cabs - showed a surprising resilience, dipping by 16 per cent to 215,000 a day. The same happened during last year's circuit breaker period.

Compared with private-hire cars, taxis have been weathering the pandemic better, even if the future of cabs remains uncertain.
Ridership figures released recently by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) showed that point-to-point (P2P) ridership took a hit when Singapore implemented tightened measures in May to address a surge in Covid-19 cases.
