SINGAPORE – Students enrolling at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in various engineering diploma courses in April will be able to choose space technology as a specialisation in their third year.

Meanwhile, the Economic Development Board’s Office for Space Technology & Industry (OSTIn) signed two letters of intent with space agencies in the Maldives and Spain to set the stage for further cooperation in terms of space-related developments.

These were among a host of key announcements on Feb 2 at the Space Summit – held at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre until Feb 3 – by various stakeholders involved in the space industry.

Here is a selection of the announcements:

Space technology specialisation at Ngee Ann Polytechnic

Ngee Ann Polytechnic is the first in Singapore to offer a space technology specialisation at the polytechnic diploma level.

Students enrolling in April in various engineering courses – including aerospace, electrical, mechanical, mechatronics and robotics, and biomedical – can opt to take the specialisation from 2028, in the first semester of their third year.

Students from different engineering domains will be brought together to work on systems design and innovation projects that are based on real-world space applications.

School of Science and Technology, Singapore (SST) and National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT)

The two academic institutions intend to expand their partnership to groom the next generation of space and science talent in Singapore.

Initiatives include participation in teacher and student training in astronomy, access to NARIT’s robotic telescope for student research, and study visits by SST students to NARIT to build up regional talent in space-related knowledge.

OSTIn and Maldives Space Research Organisation (MSRO)

OSTIn signed a letter of intent with MSRO, the official space agency of the Maldives, to work on joint projects in earth observation applications, which include climate monitoring, disaster management, food and water security, forestry and land use.

Where agreed, the two agencies will also share earth observation data, methodology and technologies.

OSTIn and Spanish Space Agency

The letter of intent signed between OSTIn and the Agencia Espacial Espanola (Spanish Space Agency) covers areas such as space situational awareness – which includes tracking the locations of objects and the environment, including weather conditions, in space – promotion of industry collaborations and exchanges on space policies.

Industry body signs three MOUs

The Association of Aerospace Industries (Singapore), or AAIS, signed separate memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with its counterparts in Australia, India and Japan.

The formal, non-binding agreements with the other space industry associations are meant to help partners explore opportunities to work together in areas like knowledge-sharing on market development, safety, sustainability, supply chain and talent development.

The association will also look at facilitating networking and business engagements among members, and extend invitations to events, conferences and industry platforms organised by respective parties.

Arkadiah and Golden Agri-Resources

Arkadiah Technology, a Singapore start-up, is working with Golden Agri-Resources, a global agribusiness, to make use of satellite remote sensing data to develop digital measurement, reporting and verification technology, which is needed for carbon accounting.

The companies are aiming to enhance the monitoring and protection of climate-critical tropical forests.

Consortium for 5G/6G-non-terrestrial network

Airbus, a global aerospace and defence company; ST Engineering iDirect, which is part of the home-grown technology, defence and engineering group; American technology company Keysight Technologies; and semiconductor company MediaTek, signed an MOU to research and develop a project on 5G/6G-non-terrestrial networks in Singapore.

The project will involve the partners studying and evaluating the communication network technology for the Republic.

Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and Digantara

In support of the work of the new National Space Agency of Singapore, announced at the Space Summit, DSTA signed an MOU with Digantara, a space surveillance and intelligence company, to develop, test and evaluate software to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness in tracking Singapore’s satellites.
