In a pre-general election interview with The Straits Times in March, then candidate Mahathir Mohamad said plans for the High-Speed Rail (HSR) with Singapore were "a little bit premature".
Upgrading Malaysia's existing rail lines would be sufficient, he said. Train speeds of 180kmh would be enough as distances were short.
